Cal Poly’s men’s tennis team won for the eighth time in its past nine matches Sunday with a 6-1 home win over Sacramento State, but the match everyone wanted to see didn’t happen.

The featured match was expected to be the No. 1 singles match between Cal Poly’s Andre Dome and Sacramento State’s Kiryl Harbatsiuk, ranked 32nd nationally.

Harbatsiuk was reportedly ill before the match and although he and Marko Starcevic played to a 9-7 loss to Dome and Alexander Sonesson at first doubles, Harbatsiuk was unable to continue in singles.

So, instead, Dome defeated Jason Smith 6-2, 6-0. That was one of five singles wins for Cal Poly (13-3). The only win by the Hornets in singles came from Starcevic, who defeated Sonesson 3-6, 6-4, 10-6.

Brian McPhee, Marco Comuzzo and Sebastian Bell won their singles matches for Cal Poly in straight sets, and Jordan Bridge was a three-set singles winner.

The Mustangs swept the three doubles matches. Other doubles teams winning for Cal Poly were Comuzzo and Bridge and McPhee and Drew Jacobs.

BASEBALL

UC Santa Barbara 5, Cal Poly 4, 13 innings

Beck Wheeler picked a good time for his first hit of the game as the Gauchos’ No. 9 hitter singled home the winning run with one out in the bottom of the 13th.

Wheeler drove in Joe Wallace, who had singled earlier in the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt.

UC Santa Barbara (14-12, 2-1 Big West Conference) took the series from Cal Poly with the win in Sunday’s deciding game.

The Mustangs (11-16, 3-3) trailed 4-2 after four innings but scored twice in the top of the eighth to tie it up.

Joey Wagman and Jeff Johnson combined to throw 6 2⁄3 scoreless innings in relief after Wagman relieved starter Chase Johnson in the bottom of the sixth.

Wagman and Johnson gave up three hits and struck out eight in their 6 2⁄3 innings.

J.J. Thompson was 3 for 6 for Cal Poly, and Mike Miller was 2 for 6.

SOFTBALL

UC Santa Barbara 5, Cal Poly 2

Keilani Jennings had two doubles and a home run as the Gauchos (18-18, 4-2 Big West) completed a three-game sweep of the Mustangs.

UC Santa Barbara jumped out to a 4-0 lead as Jennings had a two-run double in the first inning and scored on Lauren Boser’s double in the fifth after she had doubled. Boser later scored in the inning.

Cal Poly first baseman Mariah Cochiolo hit her first career home run in the bottom of the fifth to get the Mustangs on the scoreboard.

Trailing 5-1 entering the bottom of the seventh, Cochiolo walked and later scored on a Nora Sobczak single. Jillian Anderson also singled to put two Mustangs on base, but Nicole Lund lined out on the warning track in right field to end it.
