A cow broke loose from a temporary pen and ran around a field and toward a playground during the spring carnival at Baywood Elementary School today.
Capt. Tim Wilcox of CalFire Station 15 said the cow got away from handlers and at one point ran toward a playground where children were playing.
People were scooping up their little ones to make sure they did not get run over, said Wilcox.
About 300 visitors were at the carnival at the time, Wilcox estimated, including a crew from his fire station showing off its engine.
Some people were scared, but others chuckled at the escaped animal, Wilcox said.
The handlers were able to lasso the cow and return it to a trailer, he added. No one reported being hurt in the excitement, Wilcox said.
The bovine was brought to the campus for a cow chip bingo event. The carnival is an annual fund-raiser for the school, which is located at 1330 9th St. in Los Osos.
