Prep Roundup: Camacho, Torres win at Arcadia

Templeton High’s Savannah Camacho’s big day highlighted what was an eventful day at the Arcadia Invitational Saturday.

Camacho won the girls 800 meters with a time of 2 minutes, 8.30 seconds, believed to be the fastest time in the nation this season.

She beat second-place finisher Dynasty Gammage of Long Beach Poly by 0.42 seconds.

San Luis Obispo’s Abrianna Torres won the girls long jump despite suffering a hamstring injury midway through the event, forcing her to complete one of six jumps. But one go is all she needed to jump 18 feet, 10 inches.

Torres also won the heptathlon contested Thursday and Friday.

“She put up an amazing performance this weekend,” San Luis Obispo coach David Gomes said. “She just really responded well to the competition and put herself in the great position.”

The Tigers also had Elena Clarke finish fifth in the girls pole vault (11-7).

“She is definitely capable for placing higher,” Gomes said. “She was trying out a new pole and it worked out.”

Arroyo Grande had Garrett Weinreich finish eighth in the boys shot put (51-5) and Maddison Jacobs finish sixth in the girls discus (123-4).

BASEBALL

Mission Prep 7, Lindsay 0; Mission Prep 8, Lindsay 5

In the first game of the doubleheader, Mission Prep (7-4) rode the arm of Anthony Bosshardt to victory.

Bosshardt tossed a complete-game shutout, giving up two hits and walking three. He had seven strikeouts.

Bosshardt was also 2 for 4 at the plate. Teammate Trevor Fernandez went 3 for 3 with a double and an RBI, and Joey Hall was 2 for 3 with an RBI as well.

In game two, the Mission Prep bats got hot early, scoring five runs in the first two innings.

Art Lane was 2 for 4, and Bosshardt was 1 for 4 with a double and an RBI.

Stephen Fleming gave up four runs, one earned, on five hits with two strikeouts in the win for Mission Prep.

SOFTBALL

Arroyo Grande 1, Royal 0; St. Joseph (Lakewood) 3, Arroyo Grande 0

Arroyo Grande’s Kasie Craig went a combined 4 for 5 as the Eagles finished the day 1-1 at their own Softball by the Beach Tournament. Jill Compton had nine strikeouts and gave up three hits against Royal. Craig went 2 for 2 with a double in that game.

Against St. Joseph, Craig went 2 for 3 with a double for Arroyo Grande (9-7).

Templeton 6, San Joaquin Memorial 4, six innings; San Joaquin Memorial 10, Templeton 0, five innings

Ashley Stevens threw a complete six innings for Templeton (2-11) in its first game on the day at the Softball by the Beach Tournament, giving up four runs, two earned, on seven hits, and striking out six in the win.

Ashanti Alba was 3 for 3 with a double and two runs scored, and Danita Hamilton was 2 for 4 with a run scored for the Eagles.

In their second game, the Eagles managed just four hits, including one from Alba (1 for 3) and one from Marissa Tompkins, who was 1 for 2 with a walk.

Nipomo 1, Agoura 0; Washington Union 5, Nipomo 2

In the first game of the day at the Softball by the Beach Tournament, Nipomo’s Courtney Cuzick gave up just three hits and struck out nine in the complete game shutout.

Cuzick also drove in the only run of the game for the Titans (10-6) when she connected on an RBI single the bottom of the fifth. Tessa Underwood was 2 for 3 with a triple for Nipomo.

In game two, Cuzick took the loss, giving up two earned runs in four innings. She struck out seven. Underwood was again 2 for 3 with a triple for the Titans.

SWIMMING AND DIVING

Arroyo Grande at Clovis West Invitational

Thirteen of the 17 Arroyo Grande girls swimmers recorded personal-record times as the Eagles placed seventh overall — the best finish for Arroyo Grande in nine years.

Arroyo Grande had 97 points, while Clovis West won the invitational with 429.

Claren Ruth took eighth place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:02.0. Katie Sverchek placed sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.49).

Corryn Haynes placed 11th in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:19.11.
