It hailed at Hearst Castle on Friday as well as San Luis Obispo, and a mix of hail and snow fell on the Williams Ranch, about six miles northeast of Highway 1 and San Simeon Creek Road.
“This is a real crazy weather system for April,” said Cambria native Joyce Williams, who added that she’s recorded 57.5 inches of precipitation at her North Coast ranch since the rain season began July 1.
Hail and snow fell for at least a couple of hours there, starting about noon, with the white stuff piling up about 3 inches deep all around her house. Temperatures ranged from 38 to 40 degrees.
“I don’t remember that ever happening before,” she said. “It was gorgeous, cold, but it just kept coming down. I thought, ‘This is like in Tahoe.’ ”
The odd weather was hit-or-miss. Williams said she could look southward, and see hills that were still spring green, not white.
Another bout of hail started at the Williams Ranch about 4 p.m.
All the cold precipitation was expected to end overnight. Today will be partly cloudy, with highs near 60. After another cool night, Sunday will be sunny and a bit warmer.
A weak storm front will bring clouds, but no rain, Monday, then springlike weather will return starting Tuesday, according to local forecaster John Lindsey. Next week should be mostly dry but cooler than normal.
