Gov. Jerry Brown has requested a presidential major disaster declaration from Barack Obama relating to the tsunami caused by the earthquake near Japan.
The 9.0-magnitude quake off the coast of Japan last month generated a water surge that caused more than $48 million in damage to California ports, harbors, boats, businesses and infrastructure, according to Brown.
Morro Bay Harbor experienced a series of “extreme tidal surges,” and the unofficial estimate of damage there to a dock finger, pilings and other structures totals $455,000, according to Eric Endersby, harbor operations manager for the city of Morro Bay.
Brown’s request, in the form of a letter, seeks federal program assistance to supplement state and local repair and recovery efforts.
The six California counties significantly impacted by the water surge are Del Norte, Humboldt, Mendocino, San Luis Obispo, San Mateo and Santa Cruz, Brown said.
