The CHP offices in San Luis Obispo and Templeton increased their number of citations issued each year from 2007 to 2009 though the numbers dipped slightly for both in 2010.
The San Luis Obispo CHP office logged 8,742 citations in 2007; 12,857 in 2008; 10,275 in 2009; and 9,206 in 2010. Its officers patrol roads south of the Cuesta Grade.
The Templeton CHP office recorded 15,276 citations in 2007; 16,503 in 2008; 20,946 in 2009; and 19,259 in 2010. Templeton oversees roads in the North County.
The citations included violations for speeding, having expired registration, running a stop sign and illegal cellphone use, CHP spokesman J.W. Townsen said.
Local CHP officials didnt have breakdowns of those statistics immediately available.
But they said that while tickets for cellphone use have contributed to the increases, most of the overall rise in recent years can be attributed to moving violations and expired registrations.
