SOFTBALL Arroyo Grande pitchers to Fresno State, LMU

Prior to the start of this season, Arroyo Grande had two star junior pitchers give early, nonbinding verbal commitments to Division I programs, coaches said.

Jillian Compton committed to Fresno State, according to Gary Keohohou, the manager of Compton’s offseason travel team, the So Cal Pumas.

Compton has pitched 32 1⁄3 innings this season for the Eagles, posting a 2.81 ERA and 63 strikeouts. As a sophomore, she was an all-state second-team underclassman selection by Cal-Hi Sports.

Keohohou said he expects Compton to have the potential to become an All-American during her career with the Bulldogs.

Compton’s teammate, Sydney Gouveia, has committed to Loyola Marymount, Eagles coach Kristin Ciecek said. Gouveia currently has a 0.58 ERA with 61 strikeouts through 36 innings, and is also batting a team-leading .400 with nine RBI.

Verbal commitments are nonbinding until formalized during national letter of intent signing periods.
