The last day to pay the second installment of property taxes without penalty is April 11, county Tax Collector Frank Freitas said Friday.

Freitas warned taxpayers not to confuse the property tax deadline with the deadline for filing federal income taxes.

Property tax information and payment options are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week at www.slocounty.ca.gov/tax.

Freitas’ office will accept payments by all major credit cards and electronic checks. For more information, call 781-5831.

Carrizo Plain

April 11 is the deadline to register for a guided tour of the Carrizo Plain National Monument.

From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 16, attendees will learn about the plain’s native wildflowers, wildlife and geological features. The event, hosted by the Santa Margarita Western Gateway Committee, costs $20 per person and includes a picnic lunch.

Attendees will meet at Santa Margarita Park to board a Ride-On van to take them to the plain. Those interested can register online at www.smcf.org, call Gateway Committee Secretary Su Andros at 438-4618 or contact the Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo County at lc@lcslo.org or 544-9096.

The Gateway Committee was founded in 2010. Its goal is to promote Santa Margarita as one of two gateways to the Carrizo Plain National Monument. The second, called the Eastern Gateway, is in Taft in Kern County.

SLO County

A county organization that focuses on providing public services to children during their first five years is seeking two community volunteers to work with the organization.

The First 5 Children and Families Commission of San Luis Obispo County says the positions might interest parents, recipients of services, or educators specializing in early childhood development or involved with a child care resource and referral agency.

Others who might fit include representatives of local child care coordinating groups; a local organization for prevention or early intervention for families at risk; a community-based organization that has a goal of promoting and nurturing early childhood development; a local school district; or a local medical, pediatric or obstetric agency, association or society.

The commission spends about $1.4 million per year to promote and improve programs that support the early development of children.

It meets seven times a year, usually in late afternoon, throughout the county.

The openings are for four-year terms.

Interested individuals must have their applications in by 5 p.m. May 6.

Those seeking an application or information can call 781-4058 or visit http://first5slo.org.
