Nacimiento Lake water is now safe to use for drinking, bathing and cooking after repairs were made to a damaged sewer line, according to San Luis Obispo County health officials.

County Health Officer Penny Borenstein said today that the break in the sewer line submerged in the lake has been repaired, and laboratory testing has shown the water is safe.

A health advisory was issued Tuesday after thousands of gallons of lake water rushed into the Oak Shores Wastewater Treatment Plant, about six to eight miles west of the lake’s dam.

Divers on Wednesday found a roughly 2-inch-by-2-inch breach in a water line under the lake.

Residents had been advised to boil water coming from the lake, and to avoid lake activities such as swimming, waterskiing and fishing.

The repaired sewer line is part of the Oak Shores community wastewater collection system. It’s located close to the shoreline, about five feet below the current surface of the lake, public health officials said.

The breach didn’t cause sewer water to enter the lake, but rather “the wastewater system was basically draining the lake,” county Public Works Director Dave Flynn said.
