Road closures continue at the north and south ends of Highway 1, bracketing a 50-mile stretch of Big Sur. The southern closure at Alder Creek, 2 miles south of Gorda, is expected to continue “for at least a week,” and the northern closure at Rocky Creek, north of the Bixby Bridge, through the end of April, according to a Caltrans statement issued Wednesday.
A single access road, Nacimiento Fergusson Road, remains open.
Pedestrians and bicyclists are now allowed through the northern closure at 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. daily. Specialized Helicopters of Watsonville is offering airborne trips from Rocky Point restaurant south of Carmel to Little Sur River in Big Sur for $50 each way.
At the northern closure, where a 60-foot section of the highway fell into the sea March 16, a 5-ton weight limit is expected to be in force even after Caltrans is able to reopen a single lane. That will keep most tour buses, motor homes and commercial delivery vehicles from reaching Big Sur via the northern route.
