Plans call for Highway 1 at the north end of Big Sur to reopen by April 16, a month to the day after a 60-foot section slid into the ocean, Caltrans announced today.
An Oakland contractor will take on the $2.5 million emergency, temporary repair to allow the road to reopen.
Condon-Johnson & Associates will drill vertical soil nails on Tuesday to stabilize what’s left of the crumbling roadway, according to the Caltrans release.
The highway remains closed to all traffic, including emergency vehicles and pedestrians.
The 2-mile road closure runs from just north of Bixby Bridge, about 85 miles north of Cambria, to Palo Colorado Road, about 15 miles south of Carmel.
All Big Sur businesses and parks remain open and accessible via Highway 1 from San Luis Obispo and highways 46 and 1 from Highway 101.
