Talks on organic gardening, native plants and composting will be featured during a free open house today for the student-run GreenWorks Plant Nursery at Liberty Continuation High School in Paso Robles.
The nursery, which runs in conjunction with the nonprofit One Cool Earth, will feature 5,000 native plants, including several varieties of oak, sargent cypress, bigleaf maple and multiple fruit trees.
During todays open house, 1,000 certificates for free plants will be given away.
The nursery allows at-risk students to earn class credit, scholarship money and gift certificates by tending to plants, said Greg Ellis, director of One Cool Earth.
We found that they respond well to outdoor, hands-on activities, he said.
The open house, sponsored by First Solar, begins at 10 a.m. and concludes at 4 p.m. Liberty Continuation High School is at 800 Niblick Road.
