Visalia man killed in Oceano Dunes accident

March 6, 2011

A Visalia man was killed Saturday afternoon in an accident at the Oceano Dunes, the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Department announced on Sunday.

Just before 1:30 p.m., rescuers were called to the Sand Highway Marker 13 area of the Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area where an all-terrain vehicle accident was reported, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

There, Jose Lopez Jr., 37, was pronounced dead because of injuries he suffered in the accident.

Authorities have not disclosed any information about the accident, such as how many vehicles were involved or the circumstances that led to Lopez’s injuries.

His cause of death and toxicology results — testing for potential drug and alcohol use — are pending, according to the Sheriff’s Department.

The state Department of Parks and Recreation is the primary agency investigating the accident, authorities said.

State Parks representatives could not be reached on Sunday.
