Restructuring history in Nipomo

Veranda to grace Adobe

Carpenters are working on the Dana Adobe in Nipomo, replicating a veranda and crafting a cupola that hasn’t graced the historic structure since the turn of the previous century, said Marina Washburn, executive director of the Dana Adobe Nipomo Amigos.

The group last year received a $330,960 grant from the California Cultural and Historical Endowment that is being used to complete the reconstruction of the kitchen, the milking room, the store room and the courtyard at the 13-room adobe.

In 2008, the nonprofit received an $861,167 grant, which it used to purchase 29 acres around the adobe and helped to pay for roof work as well as start the restoration work on the cupola and veranda.

“By the end of 2011, we’re looking at having a complete project,” Washburn said.
