The San Luis Obispo High girls volleyball team snapped Arroyo Grande’s PAC 7 winning streak dating back to 2005 by winning 25-21, 25-20, 9-25, 17-25, 16-14 Thursday night in San Luis Obispo.

After winning the first two sets, the Tigers (12-2, 4-0 PAC 7) found themselves in the unenviable position of waking a slumbering giant.

“I knew it wasn’t going to be that easy,” San Luis Obispo coach Manny Carter said. “I knew if we were going to win it was going to be in four or five.”

The Eagles (6-1, 3-1) went on to win the third game handily and then took the fourth to set up a decisive final game.

Elizabeth Culpepper led the Tigers with 14 kills, while Beth Hoyt added 13 to go along with 25 digs.

“I told (my team), don’t sleep on them,” Carter said. “We gotta keep playing our hardest and go for broke.”

Linnea Ramirez had a match-high 38 digs for San Luis Obispo, while Kennedy Peters dished out a match-high 42 assists.

Alyssa Koenig paced Arroyo Grande with 10 kills and three blocks, while Kendall VandenBerg and Nicole Leger each had eight kills.

The Tigers were one of two teams to win a set against Arroyo Grande last season in league play.

“I told the girls, and this may sound selfish, but I personally want to get over this hump,” Carter said. “They said, ‘We’re right there with you coach.’

“We came out as one and were able to get it done.”

Paso Robles 3, Morro Bay 0

The Bearcats got a 25-13, 29-27, 25-13 nonleague win.

Krista Broderick led Paso Robles (9-3) with 15 kills, eight digs and three aces.

Kellie Reynolds added 27 assists for the Bearcats, and teammate Molly Donovan had seven kills.

Olivia Watt led Morro Bay (1-8) with nine kills, while Monica Santiago had 28 digs and Kylie Gacad had 17 assists.

Cabrillo 3, Templeton 0

The Conquistadors handed Templeton a 25-18, 25-21, 25-20 defeat.

Jeanine Madson had nine kills for the Eagles (4-4, 2-2 Los Padres League). Alyssa Cruise had four blocks and three kills.

Coast Union 3, Cuyama Valley 0

The Broncos were able to pull even on the year (4-4, 3-0 Coast Valley League) by beating the Bears in straight sets 25-9, 25-11, 25-11.

Sophie Flemion and Nicky Ortiz tied for the team led in kills, both with seven, and Flemion had two blocks. Amy Avina hit seven aces, while Roxy Mertens had five along with four kills.

Coastal Christian 3, North County Christian 0

The Conquerors got a 25-16, 25-18, 25-11 win on the road.

Leslie Henry led Coastal Christian (4-0, 3-0 CVL) with 15 kills and three blocks, while Koral Wright had a match-high 26 digs. Cristy Scarson had four aces and eight digs for the Crusaders (1-3), and Jessica Lindquist had a team-high eight kills.

BOYS WATER POLO

Nipomo 9, Atascadero 7

Marc Baker scored a team-high three goals for the Titans (6-3) at the San Luis Obispo Tournament.

Derek Seaman added two goals and Kirk Wilenius made six saves for Nipomo, which will play Newbury Park this afternoon.

Arroyo Grande 12, St. Joseph 4

The Eagles (8-3, 3-1 PAC 7), in the first day at the San Luis Obispo Tournament, put in a strong team effort to get the win over St. Joseph.

Arroyo Grande pulled ahead 5-1 by halftime and scored five goals in the fourth period to seal the victory.

“It was a great team effort, especially on defense,” Eagles coach Steven Allen said.

Warren Crandall and Kevin Meffert led the Eagles with two goals each. Seven other players each scored a goal. Goalie John Kullman had seven saves.

Santa Ynez 12, Morro Bay 4

Morro Bay (1-8) dropped its opener of the San Luis Obispo Tournament.

Anders Johnson, Keary Kennedy, Zack Moss and Tyler Fraser each tallied a goal for Morro Bay while Mac Reinhart had five saves.

GIRLS GOLF

PAC 7 at Blacklake Golf Course

San Luis Obispo’s Gillian Johnson and Paso Robles’ Ashley Levanduski each carded a nine-hole total of 48 to finish in a ninth-place tie on the Canyons Course at Blacklake.

Righetti, which won the team title with 205 strokes, had two golfers sharing medalist honors after Makayla Mier and Dani O’Keefe each shot a 39.

Led by Levanduski and Kim Bergin’s 49, the Bearcats finished third with 257 strokes while Nora Zakaria’s 50 helped the Tigers to fourth with 263.

Anna Zhang’s 52 led Arroyo Grande to fifth with 270, while Marissa McClain’s 53 was tops for Atascadero (sixth, 289).

GIRLS TENNIS

Arroyo Grande 15, Paso Robles 3

A day after ending San Luis Obispo’s PAC 7 winning streak dating to 2004, Arroyo Grande got three singles wins by Lauren Hayashi to get by Paso Robles.

The Eagles (8-0, 5-0) didn’t drop a point in doubles as the team of Courtney King and Maurisa Dominguez and the tandem of Kimmy Turner and Brianna Flood swept three sets each.

Maria Petiy won two of the Bearcats’ points with singles wins.

San Luis Obispo 11, St. Joseph 7

The Tigers won eight of their nine sets in singles.

Tori Troesch, swept all three of her sets 6-0. Lili Voisinet also swept three sets while teammate Abigail Will took both of the sets she played.

“After (Wednesday’s) loss (to Arroyo Grande), I wanted to see how (the girls) would respond. They definitely answered the call,” Tigers coach Gary Etheredge said.

Despite only winning three of their nine doubles sets, Etheredge said: “They played much better today than they did (Wednesday), especially since doubles is St. Joseph’s strength.”

Atascadero 10, Righetti 8

Amber Petersen swept her sets 6-1, 6-0, 6-1 to help the Greyhounds pull out a victory against the Warriors.

Atascadero (4-3, 2-3 PAC 7) also had a strong showing by the doubles team of Mallory Miller and Sidney Sina. While they lost their first set 6-2, they came back to win the next two 6-4, 6-3. Rhiannon Dudley also provided two wins (6-1, 6-3) in singles.

Morro Bay 13, Coast Union 5

The Broncos (1-5) fell to the Pirates.

Megan Hansen, the Pirates top singles player, won 6-0, 6-3, 6-1. Joyce Lo won two of her three sets 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.

Two of Morro Bay’s doubles teams were able to sweep. Sierra Wilcox and Jessica Wagner won 6-2, 6-0, 6-1, while Clare Olson and Emily Franz took their sets 6-2, 6-3, 6-1.

Alex Zaragova won two of her three singles sets for Coast Union. Rubi Martinez was also able to get a point for the Broncos. The doubles team of Allie Sesser and Morgan May scored the other two points.

Santa Maria 11, Nipomo 7

Despite Tessa Underwood’s three singles wins, Nipomo (0-7, 0-3 LPL) couldn’t get its first win of the season.
