A $300,000 contract has been awarded to an Oakland company to determine the feasibility and environmental impacts of desalination wells in Cambria.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers gave the contract to Diaz Yourman and Fugro. Its work began Wednesday and is planned to conclude Oct. 31.

The project involves installing temporary monitoring wells between the mouth of Santa Rosa Creek and a point slightly south of the southern staircase at Shamel Park.

Water samples and soil borings will also be gathered to determine water quality and to learn about the subsurface soil. The Army Corps hopes to examine 10 different spots along the beachfront, but it has permission right now for just two wells.

The information generated by the investigation will help the Army Corps and Cambria Community Services District determine whether desalination might be a viable water supply option for the town. Desalination is being considered because of Cambria’s historic water shortages.

Any desalination project that is proposed will have to gain approval of various permitting agencies, including the California Coastal Commission.

Group to manage real estate gifts

The San Luis Obispo County Community Foundation has formed a separate nonprofit organization called The Real Estate Foundation of San Luis Obispo County to manage donations of land to charitable organizations.

At the foundation’s website, www.realestateslo.org, there are instructions for people interested in donating real estate, as well as for professional advisers who assist clients with their finances, and for nonprofit groups that might be offered gifts of real estate.

Real estate donations are rare because of the risks and legal complexities, according to the Real Estate Foundation’s vice president and treasurer, Barry VanderKelen, who is also executive director of the community foundation.

“We’re here to simplify and facilitate that process so that more people can donate land, either improved or unimproved, and everyone can benefit,” he wrote in a recent announcement.
