  For the 19th straight year, Cal Poly has been rated the best public master’s university in the West in U.S. News & World Report’s 2012 America’s Best Colleges guidebook, according to university officials.

  Cal Poly ranked seventh in the magazine’s overall list of the West’s best universities, including both public and private institutions that provide “a full range of undergraduate and master’s-level programs but few, if any, doctoral programs.”

  U.S. News ranks colleges that grant doctoral degrees, such as those in the University of California system, in a separate category.

  For the fourth year in a row, Cal Poly has made Forbes magazine's list of the country’s best colleges and universities.

  Cal Poly ranked No. 9 among California’s public universities. Like last year, Cal Poly was named the top-ranked California State University campus on the list.

  Cal Poly appeared at No. 28 among the 50 private and public universities and at No. 230 overall among the 610 U.S. campuses on the list.

  An administrator at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse has been named Cal Poly’s new provost, the university announced in a news release Friday.

  Kathleen Enz Finken, who has served as Wisconsin-La Crosse’s provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs since 2008, will start at Cal Poly in early February as the senior member on Cal Poly President Jeffrey Armstrong’s executive management staff.

  “There are so many aspects and units of Cal Poly that offer student success and my job will be to facilitate ensuring student success on campus,” Enz Finken said.

  In the wake of this week’s decision by the California State University board of trustees to adopt a $498 tuition increase beginning next fall, Cal Poly students and their parents understandably might ask, “Again?”

  And add, “Enough already!”

  I don’t relish the idea of putting more of the financial burden on students and their parents; no one does. The reality, though, is that with very little public debate, there has been a seismic shift in public policy that leaves California’s public universities with few options.
