Longtime Councilman Allen Settle will not seek the mayor’s seat on the San Luis Obispo City Council.
Settle, who has served on the council for 30 years, will be termed out in November – making the mayoral position the only seat he could run for this election.
Settle said he decided not to run because he did not want to split votes with Councilwoman Jan Marx who announced in April that she running for mayor.
“I like Jan and it would be counterproductive to jump in the race,” Settle said. “It would split the vote and then we could both be defeated.”
Settle said he will support Marx in the election as she runs against former councilman Paul Brown.
Settle, who first served on the city’s planning commission in 1974, served four terms as mayor during his three decades on the council.
“I will remain much involved in the city and might very well jump again in two years because I enjoy doing it,” he said. “We have a terrific city and I don’t want to see it lost.”
Three of the city's five council seats will be up for re-election in November: Romero's two-year seat and the four-year seats held by Councilmen Allen Settle and Andrew Carter.
