Area Roundup: Cal Poly's Johnson on preseason honors list

Cal Poly senior wide receiver Dominique Johnson was named to the College Football Performance Awards Football Championship Subdivision Preseason Watch List on Wednesday.

Johnson caught 43 passes for 741 yards and six touchdowns after transferring from UCLA as a junior.

He was selected to the All-Great West Conference second team.

Cal Poly volleyball schedule announced

The Cal Poly volleyball schedule for 2010 is highlighted by eight matches against schools that qualified for last season’s NCAA Tournament.

The Mustangs will begin the season Aug. 27 at the Shamrock Invitational in South Bend, Ind., against Arizona. Cal Poly won’t play its first home match until Sept. 19 against Cal State Bakersfield, its only nonconference home match.

Cal Poly finished 9-20 last season and 5-11 in the Big West Conference.

Peterlin signs with English team

Former Cal Poly men’s soccer standout Anton Peterlin signed with Plymouth Argyle of English League One on Tuesday.

Peterlin was previously a member of Everton’s reserve team, making eight appearances last season before being released in June.

He made his first Plymouth appearance July 10 against Truro City while on a trial. The Pilgrims were relegated to the third tier of English soccer after finishing 23rd in the second-tier Championship League.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, though it is thought to be for one year pending a medical review.
