  San Luis Obispo County supervisors unanimously supported a 4-mile-long shaded fuel break between Cambria’s northern and eastern boundaries and the heavily forested Cambria Ranch by the Sea.

  In their action Tuesday, the supervisors denied an appeal brought against the firebreak project. The supervisors also upheld a permit for the project approved Dec. 16 by the county Planning Department.

  If the supervisors’ decision Tuesday isn’t challenged at the California Coastal Commission, Cal Fire could begin the grant-funded work soon to create a 100-foot-wide buffer zone between homes and a large stand of Cambria’s rare native Monterey pines on the 1,465-acre ranch owned by Ralph and Tracy Covell.

  A California appeals court has rejected a request by the Sierra Club to ban dune buggy riding on a county-owned parcel in Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area.

  Citing late Supreme Court Justice Felix Frankfurter, who said “wise adjudication has its own time for ripening,” a state Court of Appeals on Monday upheld a San Luis Obispo Superior Court decision that it is too late to review a coastal development permit issued in 1982 that allows off-highway vehicles on a 584-acre, county-owned parcel, called the La Grande Tract, within the park.

  “It’s a setback, but we are just going to keep at it,” said environmental attorney Babak Naficy, who represented the Sierra Club. “We will be advocating before the (California) Coastal Commission and the county.”

  Cal Fire’s controversial fuel break around Cambria was approved Friday by San Luis Obispo County’s Planning Department. The fire agency has said “a fully intact forest” will remain.

  If nobody appeals the decision during the 14-day appeal process, a permit could be issued in about three weeks, according to Cal Fire Forester Alan Peters. If an appeal is filed by Dec. 30, the issue would go to the Board of Supervisors.

  Cal Fire’s final environmental assessment of the project was released earlier this month. The agency made few changes other than additions to its draft environmental document.

  The county Board of Super visors is to consider plans to put a 4-mile long shaded fire break along much of Cambria’s northern and eastern boundaries with Cambria Pines by the Sea Ranch during its meeting Tuesday, Feb. 7.

  A permit for the project was approved by county staff Dec. 9. Greenspace— The Cambria Land Trust filed an appeal Dec. 30.

  If supervisors uphold staff’s decision, the issue is expected to be appealed to the Coastal Commission.

  An Oceano resident has appealed the San Luis Obispo County Planning Commission’s recent approval of a medical marijuana collective in the South County community.

  Thursday was the deadline to appeal Tammy Murray’s plan to open Compassionate Cannabis Information Center at 1409 S. Fourth St.

  The county Board of Supervisors would likely hear the appeal in early February, county Senior Planner Bill Robeson said.
