Former Mission Prep standout Jordan Hasay finished fourth in the 1,500-meter race at the IAAF Junior World Championships on Sunday in Moncton, Canada.
Hasay’s time of 4 minutes, 13.95 seconds was just off her previous best of 4:13.85 set at the Nike Track Nationals earlier this month.
Tizita Bogale of Ethopia won the race in a personal best time of 4:08.06, while Ireland’s Ciara Mageen was second in 4:09.51.
The 1,500 was Hasay’s last chance at a junior world championship, as only athletes 19 years old and under are eligible to compete. She finished second in the event in 2007 and fourth in 2008.
“My plan was to stay with the leaders, and they went out really hard,” Hasay told KVAL in Oregon. “With a lap to go I felt really good, but when they made a move at 300 to go I just couldn’t respond. I guess I am pretty happy I was close to my PR, I just wish I had gone a little quicker.
“In 2008, the race was very tactical, this time was completely different. I just didn’t think anyone would go out that fast. This shows how strong the Africans really are.”
Hasay competed in the 3,000 for the first time at the junior championships, finishing ninth in a personal best time of 9:15.78 on July 19.
