Arroyo Grande’s Jordan Hasay posted the eighth-fastest qualifying time Friday in the women’s 1,500-meter run at the IAAF World Junior Championships to easily qualify for Sunday’s final in Moncton, Canada.
Hasay, who finished fourth at the 2008 World Junior Championships, was second in her preliminary heat Friday in 4 minutes, 16.74 seconds, only one-hundredth of a second behind Ireland’s Ciara Mageean.
Friday’s race was contested at 9 a.m. EDT.
“It was hard but I think it’s just because it was in the morning and it hasn’t quite warmed up yet,” Hasay said in a statement released by the IAAF. “I feel good about it. I felt pretty strong at the end and just wanted to automatically qualify. The first heat was really fast so I knew I had to get that automatic spot.”
Five runners from the first heat advanced to the final, including Ethiopia’s Tiziita Bogale, who won the heat in 4:12.95. Four runners advanced from the third heat, where Kenya’s Nancy Chepkwemoi won in a personal-record 4:11.42 for the fastest qualifying time of the day. Only three runners from Hasay’s heat advanced. Hasay was the only American to reach the final.
“It was pretty slow early on,” Hasay said. “I was just trying to stay relaxed. I think I was pressing a little bit. Preliminaries are always so nerve-wracking because you’re worried someone’s going to pass you and get that spot. I’m just excited to make it to the finals and do something there.”
Sunday’s final will be at 2:15 p.m. EDT.
“I’d like to get a personal record, run somewhere around 4:10 maybe,” Hasay said. “I think it‘s a great opportunity. I feel blessed to be in the final.”
Hasay set her PR of 4:13.85 in a July 3 race in Eugene, Ore. She also finished ninth in the 3,000 at the world junior meet Monday with a PR of 9:15.78.
