A local nonprofit organization that helps at-risk youths as well as the homeless and mentally ill adults has moved.

The Transitions-Mental Health Association has moved its main administration office to 784 High St. in San Luis Obispo.

The building, at High and Santa Barbara streets, is known to longtime locals as the old Quaglino hardware store. It has been renovated and will soon sport a new sign replacing the existing Benjamin Moore Paint sign.

In buying the building, Transitions has stabilized its costs far into the future, according to Jill Bolster-White, executive director. “It will cost us less to pay mortgage for the office space than it cost to pay rent,” she wrote in a news release.

“This is a money-saving move that includes a great, visible location and a wonderful opportunity for our organization,” she wrote.

The nonprofit thanked the Thoma Electric Co. for donating electrical services to increase the building’s capacity.

The main office phone number has changed to 540-6500, although the old number will continue to roll over.

The Transitions-Mental Health Association helps children and adults live, work and grow in the community. It operates 27 programs at more than 35 locations that reach more than 2,000 people and 1,500 families in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties.

Its emphasis is on teaching vital independent living skills and “building a framework for community re-entry through personal empowerment and hands- on experience.”

For more than 30 years, Transitions has provided housing, employment, case management and life-skills support to mentally ill adults, at-risk youth and homeless adults.
