An oversized card at Atascadero Lake Park is filling up with notes from county residents in honor of veteran CHP Officer Brett Oswald, who was killed June 27.
Members of the Atascadero Veterans Memorial Foundation now want to raise money to build a permanent memorial to remember Oswald, an Atascadero resident who was working out of the CHPs Templeton office.
Oswald, 48, was waiting for a tow truck for an abandoned vehicle just south of Paso Robles when he was killed by a car allegedly driven by 22-year-old Kaylee Weisenberg of Atascadero.
Oswalds memorial would be located close to the Faces of Freedom Veterans Memorial in Atascadero Lake Park, said Dane Senser, who handles public relations, fundraising and events for the Veterans Memorial Foundation.
We want to really do something nice not only for the park, but for him ... to recognize that he was a veteran and a resident up here, Senser said. Oswald served in the U.S. Army from 1984 to 1986.
The cost for the memorial could vary from $15,000 to $50,000, Senser said.
He added that the foundation is working with the CHP and hopes to have a memorial in place by Veterans Day.
The card currently placed at the Faces of Freedom Veterans Memorial will eventually be given to Oswalds family, Senser said.
To donate or get involved, contact Senser at 540-9707 or danesenser@gmail.com, or get in touch through the foundations website, facesoffreedommemorial.org.
