SLO Blues rise in rankings, fall to Conejo Oaks

The San Luis Obispo Blues dropped a 3-0 decision to the Conejo Oaks in a California Collegiate League game Wednesday at SLO Stadium despite surrendering just three hits.

Cal State Fullerton’s Colin O’Connell made his third quality start since joining the team, surrendering his first two runs of the season on a home run by Ryon Healy.

O’Connell needed just 82 pitches to get through seven innings, allowing two hits while striking out six and walking two.

But he was matched by Conejo (11-19, 8-16) starter Jacob Fiss, who scattered seven singles in six innings while striking out four and walking none.

Austin Kingsolver, Rafael Neda and Andrew Collazo had two hits apiece for the Blues (18-10, 14-7), who fell half a game behind the Santa Barbara Foresters for first place in the league standings.

The Blues fell on the day that the newest Perfect Game Summer Top 30 rankings moved them up four spots from No. 16 to No. 12 nationally.

The Foresters, the California Collegiate League’s only other ranked team, also moved up from No. 5 to No. 3.

Cal Poly standouts Matt Jensen and Bobby Crocker are members of the nation’s No. 2 team, the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox of the Cape Cod League.

Jensen is currently on leave from the Red Sox while playing at the College National Team Trials at the National Training Complex in Cary, N.C.

On the first day of a three-game round-robin tournament, the Blues host the Orange County Pioneers today at 7 p.m. before taking on Team Vegas on Friday night.
