Cal Poly junior-to-be pitcher Mason Radeke returned from an arm injury that ended his sophomore season in March by pitching a hitless inning, and the San Luis Obispo Rattlers got two hits apiece from Justin Crumpley, Kyle Wise and Brett Wise in a 9-1 win over the California Wahoos on Tuesday at SLO Stadium.
Radeke, Cal Polys likely Friday starter next year, entered in the seventh inning with San Luis Obispo already comfortably ahead. After walking the first batter (who was later caught stealing), Radeke retired the next two on a groundout and a strikeout to complete his first live action in nearly five months.
Arroyo Grande High senior-to-be pitcher Jesse Yancosek started for the Wahoos, allowing two runs (one earned), on two hits in four innings with two strikeouts and two walks to take the loss.
The Wahoos, an under-18 team with mostly high school prospects, didnt get any run support for Yancosek as Rattlers starter Alex Sammons allowed just three hits in five shutout innings. He walked three and struck out two to get the win.
Brett Wise finished with a double and four RBI for the Rattlers (11-17) while Cal Poly product Jeff Johnson pitched a hitless ninth inning.
Brayton signs with Padres
Former Cal Poly catcher Ross Brayton signed a profession contract with the San Diego Padres and has been assigned to the Padres rookie team in the Arizona Summer League.
Brayton hit .320 with 25 RBI in his senior season at Cal Poly, becoming the fourth former Mustang to sign a professional contract since the season ended.
He joins pitcher Matt Leonard (38th round, Cincinatti Reds), Luke Yoder (40th round, Boston Red Sox) and Adam Melker (44th round, St. Louis Cardinals) in the farm system. Brayton hit .393 as a junior after transferring from Modesto College.
