7 p.m. UPDATE: The CHP reports that Highway 166 has reopened in both directions after two accidents on Monday afternoon — one requiring a helicopter air ambulance — according to radio dispatches from the scene.
6:10 p.m. UPDATE: The CHP reports that the Calstar air ambulance helicopter has taken off and the eastbound lane of Highway 166 has reopened.
ORIGINAL STORY
Highway 166 is closed about 15 miles east of Highway 101 in Nipomo because of a single-car accident in which up to five people may have been ejected from the vehicle, according to the CHP.
A Calstar air ambulance helicopter has landed on the roadway, just west of Tepusquet Road, the CHP says.
The vehicle involved — described as a tan sedan traveling east — is believed to have gone around a turn and lost control just before 5 p.m., ending up in an embankment, according to the CHP.
No information is available on estimates of when the road would reopen, nor on the condition of the people involved in the accident.
An unrelated noninjury crash along northbound 101 near the Santa Maria Speedway, just north of 166, has tied up traffic in the area as well, the CHP said.
