  A new restaurant and bar is taking the place of Broad Street Tavern in downtown San Luis Obispo.

  Sidecar, at 1127 Broad St., is offering a menu of locally grown meats and vegetables, along with craft beers, international wines and spirits.

  Its chef, John Blevins, has worked in upscale restaurants around the country. He has a history of working with local farmers and ranchers to create dishes based on an area’s foods.

  UPDATE 2:10 p.m. Wednesday: The driver of a Ford Focus that collided with a blood bank bus Tuesday has been identified as 19-year-old Michelle Whittaker of San Luis Obispo. She is in critical condition at Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center, according to police.

  The United Blood Services bus was driven by Christopher Godfrey, 29, also of San Luis Obispo. He wasn’t injured.

  UPDATE 11:55 p.m.: The driver of a car that collided with a blood bank bus in San Luis Obispo on Tuesday afternoon suffered serious injuries, police said.

  A construction and redevelopment project is under way on an acre-and-a-half parcel of land at 2959 Broad St. in San Luis Obispo. Currently, that’s where Enterprise Rent-A-Car and Luna Rustica, a furniture store and warehouse, are located. The two retailers have shared the space on Broad for nine years.

  Construction on the buildings began about three weeks ago. When the project is completed, Enterprise will have its own building at the corner of Broad Street and Sweeney Lane.

  Luna Rustica will move its retail store to the front of its existing building at that location.

  The male driver of a pickup truck was taken to Arroyo Grande Community Hospital this morning after a solo-vehicle crash in Grover Beach.

  Police responded to the report of a crash at 11:33 a.m. in the 200 block of West Grand Avenue, said Grover Beach police Sgt. Chris Sweeton.

  Sweeton said the man had apparently driven his 1994 Toyota truck over the center island, hit the concrete pillar of a privately owned street lamp, struck a sign and then hit a parked car before stopping in a parking lot. No one was in the parked car at the time, and no other injuries were reported.

  The heart of downtown San Luis Obispo will change significantly in coming years after developers were given the final approval needed to build 135,000 square feet of new commercial and residential buildings.

  The San Luis Obispo City Council voted 4-1, with Councilwoman Kathy Smith dissenting, late Tuesday night in support of Garden Street Terraces — despite hours of public comment from community members concerned about its modern architecture and planned gray-and-white color scheme.

  Mayor Jan Marx said she felt the project’s look clashed with the historic character of the surrounding buildings and tried to sway the support of her colleagues for several requirements she hoped to impose on the developer. Those changes included putting a bench in front of a planned market, lights in Garden Alley and a different color for the corner building on Broad and Marsh streets.
