  Pismo Beach officials plan to spend about $2.3 million to install two sea walls to stabilize eroding bluffs in Shell Beach.

  Doing so would protect a sewage pumping station — failure of which would cause 500 to 600 homes to be without sewage services — and prevent further erosion beneath part of Ocean Boulevard, which was happening at an “alarming rate,” city Public Works Director Dwayne Chisam said.

  This week, the Pismo Beach City Council unanimously approved a proposal for the emergency repair work, which could start in six to eight weeks, Chisam said.

  The city of Pismo Beach is closing an oceanfront area on Ocean Boulevard between Wawona and Capistrano Avenues after geological inspections revealed that portions of the coastal bluff have become unstable.

  Vehicle traffic will not be permitted; however, the area will remain accessible to bicycles and pedestrians, according to a news release. The public is encouraged to abide by all safety signs.

  This stretch of Ocean Boulevard is expected to open again after bluff stabilization measures have been completed in five to six months. Pismo Beach officials were immediately unavailable Thursday for comment.

  All three beach water sampling locations in Pismo Beach showed elevated bacteria levels this week.

  Samples taken by the county Environmental Health Department showed bacteria levels that exceeded state health standards. The sampling locations are located just south of the pier, between Ocean View and Park Avenue and at Wadsworth Avenue north of the pier.

  Signs were posted at these locations warning beach-goers to avoid contact with the ocean water, said Liberty Amundson, county environmental specialist. More samples were taken Wednesday and the signs will remain posted until samples come back showing bacteria levels within state standards.

  Painful, but good

  I agree with South County residents about the Oceano Dunes/ Beach driving activities.

  I didn’t mind the cars 25 years ago when I moved here. There were not many. Now their number is overwhelming; I resent not being able to spend safe time with the children on a beach near home. I resent the sand and dust that clog Pier Avenue and vicinity.

  Authorities said they plan a sobriety checkpoint from 6 p.m. today to 2 a.m. Wednesday near downtown Pismo Beach as part of local law enforcement agencies’ annual winter crackdown on drunken driving.

  Pismo Beach police officers, along with the Arroyo Grande, Grover Beach and San Luis Obispo police departments, the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office and California State Parks, will screen cars along southbound Highway 1 — also known as Dolliver Street — south of Frady Lane, south of the 7-Eleven store and in front of the Pismo Coast Village RV park, according to a Pismo Beach Police Department news release Monday.

  All vehicles will be stopped unless the traffic backup becomes too heavy. In that case, vehicles “will be selected by a preset standard to assure objectivity,” according to the news release.
