  Union Pacific Railroad is installing fencing adjacent to its railroad tracks in San Luis Obispo, near a spot where a 17-year-old was hit by a train and killed in July 2010 while walking a well-used path leading from Murray Street to California Boulevard.

  The railroad initiated the work and is paying for it in an effort to prevent pedestrians and bicyclists from crossing the tracks in that area, except in designated crossing locations, according to San Luis Obispo Public Works Director Jay Walter.

  The city recently completed a 500-foot portion of a bicycle and pedestrian trail that connects Cal Poly to California Boulevard. A wrought-iron fence was also installed to prevent people from trespassing on the railroad tracks.

  UPDATE 4:34 p.m.: A spokesman for Union Pacific said Tuesday that the company now plans to add an additional 60 feet of fencing along the railroad tracks in San Luis Obispo.

  The new fence will extend to the end of the property of a nearby apartment owner who has been struggling with trespassers kicking down his fence since Union Pacific installed fencing earlier this month to block a well-used path leading from Murray Street to California Boulevard across the tracks.

  Aaron Hunt, a spokesman for Union Pacific, said that since the new fencing was installed about a month ago a dramatic decrease in trespassers has been noted. “The extension seems to make sense from a safety perspective,” Hunt said.

  Traffic collisions, including injury accidents, and bicycle collisions declined last year in San Luis Obispo, according to an annual report on traffic safety.

  Traffic accidents have declined by 50 percent in the past eight years since the city started a safety program in 2002 by seeking a link between collision data and road improvements.

  The city had its first traffic related-death since 2006 when a 71-year-old drunken man walked in front of a bus traveling north on Santa Barbara Street last October.

  The city will turn off the water near Cal Poly from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday to install a fire hydrant at a private project.

  Drivers asked to take detours after work begins on Foothill Boulevard on Oct. 27

  Road closures and detours on Foothill Boulevard will begin Oct. 27 as the city’s public works department makes street surface improvements and installs new curb ramps.

  Construction will take place on Foothill Boulevard, from Ferrini Street to Santa Rosa Street, and is scheduled to continue through the beginning of November.

  Working hours for this project will be from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Mondays through Fridays. The city is asking drivers to take alternative routes during the duration of the project.
