With their school district facing a $5 million budget shortfall in the next fiscal year, Lucia Mar school district trustees decided Tuesday to show their support for district staff by taking a pay cut.
The $456 monthly stipend received by the seven board members will be reduced by 5 percent. Trustees voted 5-0 on the reduction; trustees Colleen Martin and Erik Howell were absent.
The board also approved a proposal for more than 60 management-level district employees, including the superintendent, school principals and counselors, to take a number of unpaid days off next school year to save $297,000.
The number of furlough days range from six to eight days for each management staff member, and result in a 3 percent pay cut.
The money will be used to hire back three area administrators, similar to assistant principals.
District trustees voted in mid-May to issue final layoff notices to 67.9 full-time-equivalent positions, affecting 74 credentialed employees.
Also, 31 credential employees so far plan to retire. That will allow the district to rehire some of the laid-off employees.
