San Luis Obispo

Residents threatened by budget cuts that Gov. Arnold Schwarzen-egger is expected to announce Friday will rally today at the office of Assemblyman Sam Blakeslee, R-San Luis Obispo.

The rally at 1104 Palm St. starts at 6 p.m.

Organizers are inviting seniors and those who receive Medi-Cal, in-home supportive, mental health and other social services. They expect the governor to hit those areas the hardest in an update to his proposed 2010-11 budget.

“The governor’s proposed $6 billion cut to health care will cost more than 42,000 jobs,” said Jessica Rothhaar, program director for the statewide advocacy coalition Health Access.

She said cutting those areas in the budget will cause the state to “lose ... billions in federal matching funds and related business activity.”

Allison Merzon, a health educator at Cuesta College and president of the Cuesta College Federation of Teachers, said, “After years of budget cuts, California now ranks close to the bottom in almost any measure of how well we support public education and the other basic services of our state.”

Merzon and Rothhaar said the state should instead go after tax loopholes enjoyed by corporations.

Arroyo Grande

A public forum today will focus on efforts in the past decade to improve Arroyo Grande Creek water quality, reduce erosion and sedimentation, and boost the steelhead trout population in the watershed.

The forum will include speakers from the Coastal San Luis Resource Conservation District, Central Coast Salmon Enhancement and the county Public Works Department.

It will run from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in Arroyo Grande City Council chambers at 215 E. Branch St.

Attendees will receive a free copy of the newly released Arroyo Grande Creek Care Guide. To preview the guide, go to www.arroyogrande.org or www.centralcoastsalmon.com.

Paso Robles

The Paso Robles Library Foundation’s cornerstone fundraiser is back after a three-year hiatus.

Midsummer Magic is planned for 7 p.m. June 26 at 1000 Spring St. Tickets will be available at the Paso Robles City Library beginning Saturday and are $65 per person.

The longtime event, last held in July 2007, went on hiatus so foundation members could look at ways to restructure it, city librarian Julie Dahlen said.

“We have now recharged Midsummer Magic with a vintage Vegas theme,” she said. There will be “a casino, dancing, fine wines, frosty beer and hearty appetizers.”

The silent auction will return, giving attendees the opportunity to take home gift baskets.

All funds raised go to the library’s materials, online databases and programs, including the annual summer reading program, which is open to everyone.

In summer 2009, more than 1,000 children, teens and adults took part in the reading incentive program.

More information is available at www.midsummermagic.com.
