Assemblyman Sam Blakeslee, local elected officials and veterans will celebrate the dedication of the Purple Heart Trail with the installation of the first highway marker Friday.
The marker will go in at Highway 41 and El Camino Real in Atascadero in the dirt parking lot adjacent to Rabobank overlooking the section of Highway 101, where the first Purple Heart Trail sign will be installed.
The dedication is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
Blakeslee, R-San Luis Obispo, was first approached by local veteran and Purple Heart Recipient Tim Haley in 2008 requesting that Highway 101 be added into the National Purple Heart Trail.
Last year, Blakeslee authored ACR 12, a measure that designated a 115-mile portion of Highway 101 from the city of San Ardo to the city of Los Alamos as National Purple Heart Trail. The Legislature unanimously approved the measure.
Ten Purple Heart Trail signs will be installed throughout three counties, marking Highway 101 as a part of the nationwide network. The trail is intended to serve as a reminder of all the men and women who have been wounded or killed in combat while serving in the United States armed forces.
There are an estimated 26,000 veterans in San Luis Obispo County.

The race begins at Big Sur Station, just south of Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park, and heads north to Carmel.
Northbound traffic will be stopped starting at 6:15 a.m. Sunday; southbound traffic will be stopped south of Carmel Highlands starting at 4 a.m.
The highway is scheduled to reopen at 1 p.m.

Caltrans will hold its 20th annual Worker Memorial Ceremony today to honor workers killed while working on state highways.
The public ceremony will be held today at 9:30 a.m. at the Caltrans District 5 office at 50 Higuera St. in San Luis Obispo.
Since 1924, 174 Caltrans employees have been killed on the job, eight in the Central Coast district.

The public is also invited to attend the Caltrans District 5 Health and Safety Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., which will follow the Worker Memorial Ceremony.
Local physician Amandeep Singh will appear on the popular game show Wheel of Fortune tonight at 7.
Singh practices at Community Health Centers on Spring Street in Paso Robles.
He auditioned for the show in August 2009 and was selected to be a contestant, but he was not told when he would appear on Wheel of Fortune until January.
Singh said he watches the show every night with his wife and 2-year-old daughter, who he said sings the theme song and shouts out letters.
