The county clerk-recorder is working to place little-seen documents regarding the Los Osos sewer project on the county’s website, where they will be more accessible to the general public.
County Clerk-Recorder Julie Rodewald had the 1,000-page document on Thursday, and was scanning it. After that job is done – she estimated it would take “probably a couple of hours” – it will available to go up on her site or the Department of Public Works site.
Los Osos residents have complained that the county made only one copy available, and then only during business hours and at the county offices.
The “counter” copy became available after residents complained.
The limited access shut out people who could not get to county offices because they work or who could not wait in line for others to look through the report, they said.
One resident, Julie Tacker, accused the Board of Supervisors of “snub(bing) your nose at the public.”
Public Works Director Paavo Ogren said earlier this week that he had not ordered it put on line because his department had a lot to do, and this was not as high a priority as other things.
“It is not reasonable to assume that the county will just simply post to a website everything that we are doing,” Ogren wrote. “I'm certainly not opposed to posting more information to the web, but I must still consider priorities in managing a public agency.”
Nonetheless, Ogren welcomed Rodewald’s help.
The document is actually a collection of other documents, according to Mark Hutchinson, environmental programs manager for the DPW.
However, some of it is the county’s response to recent requests for information from the California Coastal Commission, he added.
In an e-mail to The Tribune earlier this week, Supervisor Bruce Gibson, who represents Los Osos, wrote, that “The criticism we've received …is a bit excessive relative to the high standard of our performance.”
“For over three years, the county has shown unprecedented transparency and responsiveness to document requests on this (sewer) project,” Gibson wrote.
