Cuesta College’s Craig Vanleeuwen won the men’s pole vault with a state-best mark as the Cougars men took fourth place at the Western State Conference North Meet on Friday in Ventura.
Cuesta swept all three places in the men’s pole vault, with Vanleeuwen posting a height of 17 feet, 1 inch, which is the leading mark in the state, Cuesta coach Jani Johnson said.

Zach Siegmeier followed in second place for Cuesta with a height of 15-9 and Sam Sampson came in third with a height of 15-3.
Taylor Castanon took second place in the 1,500-meter race with a time of 4 minutes and 6 seconds for the Cougars and Travis Hallanan came in third with a time of 4:07.
“It was a really good overall day and a close good meet,” Johnson said.
The Cuesta women finished third.
Paige Peterson won the 3,000 for Cuesta in a time of 11:02 and Aalia Fields took second in the 400 with a time of 1:03.
Cuesta’s Devon Kelsey came in second in the 800 with a time of 2:29 as well as the 1,500 with a time of 4:57.
Cuesta swept in the women’s pole vault with Sara Pizzo coming in first with a height of 10-6 and Nicole Warden cleared the same height but finishing second on misses.
Nicole Foster took third for the Cougars in the pole vault after clearing 8-0.
Christine Weinreich took first in the hammer throw for Cuesta with a distance of 154-0, which is a personal best and a new school record.
Weinreich also took first in the discus with a distance of 126-11.
WOMEN’S TENNIS Cal Poly 6, Utah State 1 The Cal Poly women’s tennis team is about to embark on a stretch where they play seven nationally ranked teams in 11 matches.
The Mustangs (11-2) seemed to use Friday’s home match with Utah State as little more than a tune-up for the challenges ahead, beating the Aggies handily.
Cal Poly swept in doubles including an 8-0 win by Ashley Pane and Diane Filip.
“I was very pleased with our doubles play today,” Mustangs head coach Hugh Bream said. “We were aggressive and dominant at the net in all three sets.”
Cal Poly has won 12 of 13 doubles points this season.
Pane didn’t drop a game in singles play either, taking a 6-0, 6-0 decision over Brittany Watts.
Cal Poly will play Dartmouth today at Mustang Courts.
