Cal Poly saw two of its wrestlers advance to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships on Thursday in
Omaha, Neb.
Boris Novachkov, seeded fifth at 155-pounds, beat Kendric Maple of Oklahoma (6-3) and No. 12 Steve Mytych of Drexel (4-1 in overtime) to advance to a quarterfinal matchup with No. 4 Jordan Oliver of Oklahoma State.
Chase Pami, who is bidding for his second All-American honor by finishing in the top eight, took a 3-2 decision over Kurt Kinser of Indiana and won 7-5 over No. 10 Shane Vernon of Oklahoma at 157 pounds.
Pami is two wins shy of 100 for his career at Cal Poly. Hell face Boise States Adam Hall in the quarterfinal.
Hall and Pami have wrestled six times in the past two years with Hall winning five of the matches.
Pamis lone win over Hall was in the Pac-10 final a year ago.
Filip Novachkov, seeded No. 7 at 141, split a pair of matches and will wrestle Dalton Jenson of Iowa State today.
Ryan DesRoches (174) and Nick Fisher (149) fell in the wrestlebacks on Thursday.
Cal Poly is tied for 29th place in the team standings with nine points.
The tournament continues today and wraps up with the championship finals Saturday.
