Mission Prep pounds Coast Union, 23-3

After the Broncos scored three runs to take a 3-1 lead going into the second inning Tuesday, March 16, at Coast Union, fans on hand had high hopes that maybe this time Coast Union could beat their archrivals from Mission Prep.

But those hopes, like the Sinatra song, were apple pie in the sky hopes, because reality soon set in. The Royals took advantage of walks, hit batsmen, and a couple Bronco throwing errors to pile on the runs, eventually handing Coast Union a 23-3 whipping in front of the home folks.

The Broncos used four pitchers, Jake Machado, Trevor Cook, Garrett le Millere and Stuart Mahoney. Each new pitcher had the same problem –failure to throw strikes –so the results were the same.

One of the Broncos best pitchers at the outset of the season — Clinton Almekinder — is no longer on the team, and that hurt Coast Union’s chances as the Royals continued racking up the runs and the Bronco pitching was wholly ineffective.

When the Royals weren’t being walked or hit by pitches, they were slamming the ball all over the park. There’s an old baseball maxim that says, don’t give a good team anything (walks, hit batsmen, errors) because they’ll take enough on their own.

That brings the Bronco’s season record to 1-3. The Royals are 1-2, having lost earlier to Templeton and to Nipomo. Things don’t get any easier for Coast Union as today, March 18, they travel to Nipomo and play a school with over 1,200 students (Coast Union’s enrollment is in the 230s).

But on Saturday, March 20, the Broncos are home at Coast Union to take on Avenal, a team they should match up against a little better than Mission Prep. And the Sinatra song just might provide some hopeful optimism, giving the Broncos the lift they need to steady their rocky ship.
