  Juried art show deadline Tuesday

  E ntries are due Tuesday, Feb. 7, for an upcoming Cambria Allied Arts Association juried art show.

  Set to run Feb. 10 through March 11, the show will be juried by Ruta Saliklis, the exhibition director at San Luis Obispo Museum of Art. The show will feature two and three-dimensional works in paintings, sculpture, photography and all other visual arts.

  Cambria “plein air” painter Steve Kellogg is preparing a possible entry for the upcoming Juried Fine Art Exhibit being sponsored in February by Allied Arts Association at Cambria Center for the Arts, 1350 Main Street, Cambria.

  In commenting on the prospect of being accepted into a juried art show, or not, Kellogg admitted “there’s some ego involved in whether you get juried in,” but added, “it’s all fun, part of being in the local art community.”

  Judging the multi-media, two- and three-dimensional works being submitted will be Ruta Saliklis, exhibition director for San Luis Obispo Museum of Art, who will present awards and discuss her choices at a public reception in the Art Center, Friday, Feb 10, 5:30 to 7 pm. Refreshments will be served.

  January Blues at the Cambria Allied Arts Association’s showroom could reflect the letdown following the holidays, the cold weather, or simply pay homage to such artists as Picasso, Degas and O’Keeffe, who went through their “blue” period.

  No matter how you interpret it, however, the exhibit offers a glimpse of blue through the eyes of artists.

  Two of the artists, Loretta Novak and Nicole Anderson, experienced their own blue periods, so selecting work for the exhibit was no problem.

  Randy Stromsoe’s enthusiasm radiates like the rays from his highly polished silver and pewter work.

  “Right now I’m still excited about everything in my profession,” said the blue-ribbon winner of the Fine Craft exhibit at the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art. His first-place entry, “Mardis Gras,” wasn’t what he planned to submit, but the other pieces he was working on weren’t quite finished.

  The winning teapot was included in his solo exhibit at the SLO Museum of Art late last year. Of pewter and rosewood, it entailed quite a few pieces. “It’s a difficult construction,” Stromsoe said, and the handle and spout emulate those created two centuries ago.

  Philip Carey home: Turning dreams into reality

  When Philip Carey studied Exhibit Design at Long Beach State College, he never dreamt that he’d become an artist. But since his retirement 2-1/2 years ago, he has produced three volumes of Dream Books, with cartoonlike drawings based on his “numerous, vivid and wacky dreams.”

  He draws while the images are fresh in his mind the next morning. Two exhibits of his art are scheduled during February, in Morro Bay and San Luis Obispo galleries.

  He began his career in exhibit design at the California Museum of Science and Industry in Los Angeles, continued at the Roberson Museum in Binghamton. New York, and concluded after 20 years as an exhibit designer for the California State Parks system.
