John Brannon: Cambria is a daffy town

Let 80,000 daffodils bloom: The Cambria Garden Club took a break from selling bulbs, but not from giving scholarships.

It’s time for a change, but we will still have the beauty of the past 11 years to savor for yet another colorful spring. In 1999, Margaret Wilder, Carlotta Finnegan and Pat Moreno were looking for an activity to enhance our community. They decided providing daffodil bulbs for sale would fill the bill: bringing beauty to our humble village and awarding scholarships to deserving students.

Pat presented the idea to the Van Engelen Company in Connecticut, a major wholesale bulb business. “Several weeks later, a UPS truck delivered 13,400 bulbs to my home! Our garage turned into a warehouse, a storage and shipping facility and we were on our way,” she recalled recently.

But the project has grown immensely and the time has come to take a much-needed break for the Cambria Garden Club.

Nearly 80,000 bulbs have been sold since 2000 and more than $27,000 in scholarships have been provided to seniors at Coast Union High School. In 2002, the Garden Angel Program was created for those gardeners who had run out of space.

These gift bulbs have been planted all over Cambria and are a visual treat for residents and visitors alike. Several hundred bulbs have been donated.

The Van Engelen Company has provided a world-wide reputation for Cambria by including CGC brochures in their fund-raising promotion packets for the past seven years.

There will be no bulb sale this year, but the garden club will still provide two $1,000 scholarships for Coast Union as well as a $500 donation for gardening projects at the Cambria Grammar School.

For details about the Cambria Garden Club, contact President Kathi Rippe at 927-2379.

Addendum: A number of readers have expressed disappointment that they missed Sarah Wright’s March 6 fundraiser at the Veterans Memorial Building. Donations will be accepted until she leaves for Spain in August. Send contributions to Sarah Wright, P.O. Box 819, Cambria CA 93428. Call 927-5311 for more information.
