Former Cal Poly football standout Stan Sheriff — who also played in the NFL before becoming a college coach and administrator — will be posthumously inducted into the San Francisco Prep Hall of Fame in May.
Sheriff attended George Washington High School in San Francisco from 1947-50, where he earned first-team All-Academic/Athletic Association honors in 1948 and 1949 as a center and linebacker.

Sheriff, who died in 1993, was a four-year starter at center for the Cal Poly football team from 1950 to 1953, leading the Mustangs to the California Collegiate Athletic Association title with a 9-0 record during an MVP senior season.
He was drafted by the Los Angeles Rams in 1954 and played for the Pittsburgh Steelers, San Francisco 49ers and Cleveland Browns from 1954-57.
Sheriff started his teaching career at Northern Iowa in 1958, where he was football coach and athletic director. He took over as Hawaii’s athletic director in 1983.
Dargitz, Pickett win Big West honors
Cal Poly track and field athletes Carl Dargitz and Jasmine Pickett were selected as the Big West Conference’s male and female athletes of the week.
Dargitz set a stadium record with his winning time of 8 minutes, 52.61 seconds in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a dual meet against Fresno State on Saturday.
The mark is No. 8 all-time at Cal Poly and is a personal best for Dargitz, lowering the mark from 9:01.82 he set a year ago. Pickett won both the long jump (18 feet, 71⁄2 inches) and the triple jump (42-01⁄2).
