Cuesta College sophomore shooting guard Roger Guardia can add another award to his growing list of honors this season.

Guardia, already a unanimous choice for Western State Conference Player of the Year, was named to the all-state first team Tuesday.

The 6-foot-4, 185-pound guard helped lead the Cougars (26-6) to the CCCAA Southern California regional final, where they fell 82-80 to eventual state semifinalist Citrus.

Guardia averaged a team-best 15.8 points per game to go along with 6.5 rebounds and 2.2 assists and joins 2009 honorees Tom Schumacher and Joismar Ayarza as Cuesta’s only all-state first team members in 11 years.

Also making the all-state team was former Cal Poly combo guard Bo Henning.

Henning saw limited action as a Mustang, averaging 1.7 points per game in 17 games during the 2008-09 season. He was given honorable mention recognition for his work as a sophomore at Yuba College.

Henning left Cal Poly after two years, including using his redshirt season in 2007.

Cuesta baseball team falls to Ventura

The Cuesta College baseball team gave up seven runs in the opening two innings and managed no extra base hits in a 9-1 road loss to fall to 8-8 and 1-3 in the Western State Conference.

Cuesta softball team splits

Alex Ramirez hit a grand slam in the second inning for the Cuesta softball team in an 8-7, 10-inning loss in the first game of a Western State Conference doubleheader at Ventura.

Ventura completed a two-out, bases empty rally for three runs in the seventh to force extra innings.

Alyssa Giorvanengo had two doubles with two RBI in second game, a 5-2 Cuesta win. Cuesta (10-12-1, 4-1 WSC) trailed 1-0 in the seventh bebefore rallying.

Tiffany Larsen hit a triple for Cuesta and had two RBI.

“We battled hard in both games and both games had crazy finishes,” Cuesta coach Mike Steuerwald said.
