  Calen Coleman scored 15 points, and Cuesta College’s men’s basketball team won a defensive slugfest Wednesday night with a 60-53 Western State Conference victory at Allen Hancock College.

  The Cougars (19-7, 7-1 WSC), who lost to the Bulldogs by one point in a December tournament, completed a conference sweep of Hancock in remaining atop the WSC’s Northern Division.

  Cuesta completed a sweep of Ventura on Saturday and is now 4-0 against the two teams directly below them in the Northern Division standings.

  With one swing of the bat, former Cal Poly baseball star Jimmy Van Ostrand drove in the only two runs Canada needed to beat the United States 2-1 Tuesday and win the gold medal at the Pan American Games.

  Van Ostrand stepped up to the plate with two men on base in the top of the sixth inning and doubled down the right field line to bring in Chris Robinson and Tim Smith. Both Robinson and Smith had two-out singles to start the rally.

  “We’ve finally accomplished what we set out to do,” said Canada manager Ernie Whitt, a 15-year major league player. “I am so proud of these guys. They’ve worked so hard for this and didn’t give up.”

  Every time the Cuesta College men’s basketball team made its run, it seemed as if Ventura had the answer.

  But just when it looked like the Cougars had nothing left, Malte Kramer gave the Cougars the rallying cry they needed.

  “We’re going to hold them,” Kramer told his teammates on the sideline. “And we’re going to win this game.”

  The Cal Poly baseball team was picked to finish fourth in the nine-team Big West Conference this season in a coaches poll released Wednesday.

  The Mustangs finished third in the conference a year ago, posting a 27-26 (15-9 Big West) record. The Mustangs set Division I program records in lowest ERA (3.60), lowest opponents batting average (.254) and fewest walks allowed (152) among others.

  However, the Mustangs come into this season after losing two of their three starting pitchers. They’ll be without Mason Radeke, who finished last year with a 3.07 ERA and a team-high 95 strikeouts, and Steven Fischback, who posted a 3.33 ERA and a 7-3 record.

  Cuesta College's Malte Kramer scored a team-high 31 points, with seven 3-pointers, and the Cuesta men’s basketball team defeated rival Ventura 84-79 in their Western State Conference opener Wednesday on the road.

  Calen Coleman, who was just named the Cougars’ Male Athlete of the Month, scored 16 points, hitting 6-of-9 shots from the floor, and had 13 rebounds. He came into Wednesday’s matchup averaging 16.6 points per game, with 6.3 rebounds per game and 1.6 assists per game.

  Nick Sauer added 11 points for Cuesta (13-6, 1-0 WSC), which shot both 44 percent from the floor and from behind the 3-point arc.
