The Board of Supervisors on Tuesday agreed to send a resolution to the state Department of Fish and Game opposing the extension of bear hunting in San Luis Obispo County.
Supervisors said the extension is unnecessary. “I don’t see the justification,” said Bruce Gibson.
The board resolution says there have been 12 reported safety incidents involving black bears statewide since 1980, none of them in San Luis Obispo County.
Supervisors also chastised Fish and Game for not holding a hearing in San Luis Obispo County, where interest in the question of bear hunting is high. Adam Hill called that decision “inexcusable.”
Jim Patterson said he had spoken with a hunter who worried that expanding black bear hunting in this county would attract hunters from elsewhere and decimate the local bear black bear population.
A handful of speakers argued for or against the resolution.
