Run in sixth inning lifts Cal Poly softball

Despite blowing all of a four-run lead after the fifth inning, the Cal Poly softball team got a two-out RBI single from sophomore centerfielder Kendal Hennings in the bottom of the sixth to earn a 5-4 win over Cal State Bakersfield on Sunday.

The victory capped a 3-2 record for Cal Poly (8-8 overall) in its own Mustang Classic Tournament at Bob Janssen Field.

The Mustangs committed three errors in the top half of the sixth to help spur the Roadrunners’ comeback, and junior lefty Anna Cahn, who was perfect through three innings and had allowed just two hits through five innings, allowed the tying run to score on a wild pitch.

In the bottom of the inning, Hennings plated pinch-runner Capri Ruiz from second on a single to center when Ruiz got around the tag of Cal State Bakersfield catcher Jaimey Kleinsmith.

BASEBALL Houston 5, Cal Poly 3 The Mustangs (6-9) were swept at home for the first time in nearly two years as the Cougars (8-5) took the finale of a three-game series after scoring single runs in each of the first two innings.

Cal Poly got a home run from second baseman Matt Jensen, his second of the series and of the season, but it was not enough to back starting pitcher Mason Radeke (3-1).

Radeke took his first loss of the season after allowing three runs on six hits while walking two and striking out none in six innings.

Cal Poly was held to just six hits, including a single and a double by freshman outfielder Mitch Haniger, who went 2 for 3.
