Oregon freshman Jordan Hasay finished fourth Saturday in the women’s one-mile run at the NCAA indoor track and field championships to help the Ducks win their first indoor team title in Fayetteville, Ark.
The former Mission Prep star was fourth in the mile in 4 minutes, 38.29 seconds after entering the meet with the third-fastest collegiate time this season.
The top three finishers ahead of Hasay are all seniors. Florida’s Charlotte Browning won the race in 4:35.66 and was followed by Washington’s Katie Follett (4:36.29) and Florida State’s Pilar McShine (4:37.20).
Hasay was also in the 3,000 Saturday but stepped off the track and did not finish that race.
The Ducks finished with 61 points to easily win the women’s team title over runner-up Tennessee, which scored 36 points.
Hasay also ran the anchor leg on Oregon’s second-place distance medley relay team Friday. That team set a school record of 10:58.96 in finishing behind Tennessee (10:58.37).
Florida took the men’s team title with 57 points to 44 for Oregon and Texas A&M, and 42 points by LSU.
The individual highlight of the meet came from Oregon’s Ashton Eaton, who set a world record in the two-day men’s heptathlon, scoring 6,499 points to break the world and American record of 6,475 points set by Dan O’Brien in 1993. O’Brien was the 1996 Olympic gold medalist in the decathlon.
Men: Cal Poly 122, Fresno State 75; Women: Cal Poly 103, Fresno State 92
The Mustangs opened the dual season with home wins over Fresno State.
Carl Dargitz won the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase in 8:52.61, nearly 23 seconds ahead of teammate Andy Wright.
Jasmine Pickett won the women’s long and triple jump for Cal Poly, taking the triple with a jump of 42-1⁄2 and the long jump at 18-71⁄2.
Joe Gatel took the men’s 5,000 in 14:43.73, and Kristen Sanzari won the women’s 800 in 2:19.41
BASEBALL
Houston 6, Cal Poly 2
The Mustangs (6-8) dropped their second straight at home to Houston (7-5).
Joey Wagman allowed two runs on three hits in 51⁄3 innings, walking five and striking out seven.
Mitch Haniger had a chance to tie the score with the bases loaded in the ninth but flew out to end the game. He finished with two hits and a run scored.
Adam Melker and Bobby Crocker added two hits apiece for the Mustangs, who will close out the series at 1 this afternoon.
Oxnard 4, Cuesta 3
Matt Anderson and Zach Steele had two hits apiece for Cuesta (8-7, 1-2 Western State Conference).
Brett Hartman had a double, and Jake Reed allowed four runs in six innings in the loss.
SOFTBALL
Cal Poly 3, Sacramento State 0; Iowa State 6, Cal Poly 2
Cal Poly split during the second day of the Mustang Classic at Bob Janssen Field.
In the opener, Anna Cahn scattered eight hits while striking out six in a shutout win.
Designated hitter Sara Kryza had two hits and an RBI for Cal Poly, while Cahn helped her own cause with a double.
In the second game, the Mustangs got a two-run homer from Krysten Cary to jump out to a 2-0 lead.
But the Cyclones (12-11) picked scored the final six runs to claim the victory.
