Prep Roundup: San Luis Obispo boys take fourth place at volleyball tournament

The San Luis Obispo High boys volleyball team finished fourth out of 20 teams at its 11th annual SLO-town Invitational on Saturday.

The Tigers beat Madera and Oxnard in preliminary play before splitting a pair of sets with Trabuco Hills to claim one of the top four seeds and a bye through the first round of the elimination rounds.

San Luis Obispo beat Oxnard for a second time before falling to Bullard in the semifinal and California of San Ramon in the third-place match.

Chip Blaney and Nick Butier had 48 kills apiece over the course of the tournament for the Tigers, and Sam Duval added 34. Jeremy Cleere had a team-high 65 digs and was named to the all-tournament first team.

Saint Margaret’s of San Juan Capistrano, which boasts three-time Olympic gold medalist Karch Kiraly as an assist coach and his son Kory as a team captain, won the tournament championship for the second consecutive season.

SOFTBALL

King City 6, San Luis Obispo 2; San Luis Obispo 11, Soledad 0, 5 innings

Despite Kellie Lewelling’s run-scoring triple in the first, the Tigers couldn’t hold the momentum in an early loss to King City. San Luis Obispo led 2-0 in the sixth before King City scored all six of its runs in the inning.

San Luis Obispo beat Soledad in its second game at King City, which was called after five innings.

Andrea Reynolds gave up one hit and had 11 strikeouts with no walks for the Tigers.

Reynolds was also 3 for 3 and hit two doubles, driving in two runs and scoring four times, while Kerri Jacobs was 3 for 4 and had two doubles and three RBI.

Lompoc 4, Arroyo Grande 0; Arroyo Grande 3, Ventura 0

Arroyo Grande was shut out by Lompoc in its first game at the Simi Valley Tournament.

Katie Brooks held Lompoc to only four hits and had 10 strikeouts for Arroyo Grande, but it wasn’t enough.

“Brooks had a solid performance,” Arroyo Grande coach Kristin Ciecek said.

Arroyo Grande came back to shut out Ventura in its second game.

Megan Knight hit a double that drove in the Eagles’ first run in the second inning.

Jill Compton had 14 strikeouts and also was 2 for 3 at the plate for the Eagles.

“We played with a lot better intensity and our bats came alive,” Ciecek said.

Mission Prep 9, Soledad 2; King City 8, Mission Prep 3

Cat Hall and Ally Kersthold had two hits apiece in the Royals’ win over Soledad, while Amanda Souchek allowed two runs on seven hits in a complete-game victory.

In the second game, Hall was perfect at the plate with four hits, and Kersthold added two for the Royals (2-1).

Kings Christian 16, Coast Union 12

Coast Union got three hits apiece from Ashlyn Silva and Alex Scrivner in a four-run loss at home.

BASEBALL

Coast Union 9, Kings Christian 4

Jake Machado held Kings Christian scoreless through three innings before allowing four in the fourth but picked up the win. Alex Wolf had two hits for Coast Union, and Jaime Torres got the save.

Santa Monica 7, San Luis Obispo 4

David Murillo had two hits and three RBI, and Connor Mulvaney was 2 for 3 with a double as the Tigers (1-3) finished out the Easton Tournament with a loss.

BOYS TENNIS

San Luis Obispo 17, San Pasqual 1

The Tigers swept in singles with James Campbell and Coco Angulo not dropping a game, and Shaharukh Syed also winning three sets.

San Luis Obispo (2-4) will contest its first PAC 7 match Tuesday at Paso Robles.

TRACK AND FIELD

Morro Bay at Wildcat Relays

Morro Bay’s girls pole vaulters took first place out of 10 teams at the Wildcat Relays while the boys finished third.

Megan Cugini, Jessica Balcer and Alice Hermann all made up the winning team for the Pirates with a combined height of 23 feet to win.

Morro Bay’s Kyle Foster, Ethan Valivero and Nathan Zak took third place with a combined height of 34 feet, which was eight inches shy of the win.
