The Cal Poly Vines to Wines Club is selling tickets for its eighth annual Cal Poly Wine Festival Weekend, according to university officials.
The weekend kicks off April 23 at the Cal Poly Arboretum with a barbecue and live auction for Cal Poly alumni and winemakers of attending wineries. Tickets are $50, and space is limited to 200.
The Wine Festival will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. on April 24 at Santa Margarita Ranch in Santa Margarita, about 12 miles north of Cal Poly on Highway 101.
The student-run event will showcase wineries from throughout California, as well as local restaurants and caterers. Event proceeds support Cal Poly’s Wine and Viticulture Program.
Tickets — limited to 1,000 and on sale soon — are $50 general admission, $45 for students and $15 for designated drivers. VIP tickets are available for $65 and include early entrance at noon and a specialty wine glass.

The San Luis Obispo County Community Foundation is accepting nominations for the Fourth Annual Isabel P. Ruiz Humanitarian Award, which recognizes county individuals who show leadership, influence and advocacy.
The award was established in 2007 and is named after community volunteer Isabel Ruiz, a local health advocate.
To be eligible, nominees must be residents of San Luis Obispo County and should demonstrate selfless desire to help others, community leadership, advocacy to create change and an ability to influence others to create change.
The deadline for nominations is May 1. Forms can be found online at www.sloccf.org by clicking on “Apply for an Award.”

Efforts by the Land Conservancy of San Luis Obispo County to complete restoration of the historic Octagon Barn received a boost last week in the form ofa donation from the Forbes Family Fund.
At the request of the family, the amount of the donation is not available. It is, however, enough to take the project through the county’s permitting process, said Wende David, the group’s membership and development manager.
The century-old barn, located just south of San Luis Obispo on South Higuera Street, has been physically restored since the Land Conservancy took it over in 1998.
Now, the group plans to convert it into a community gathering place to promote local agriculture, history, recreation and sustainability.
