Jill Compton had a career-high 16 strikeouts for the Arroyo Grande High softball team in a 5-4 home loss to St. Joseph in eight innings Friday.

Not bad for her second varsity start.

Compton, a sophomore, pitched a complete game for the Eagles, who lost for the first time this season.

“She had a good outing,” Arroyo Grande coach Kristin Ciecek said. “We just ended up on the wrong side of a couple key hits.”

Moriah Vargas and Megan Knight had two hits apiece for the Eagles (2-1).

Nipomo 5, Santa Ynez 4

Nipomo took the lead in the first inning with two runs in the Titans’ home win.

Cami Castillo hit a double for Nipomo and was 2 for 3 with an RBI.

Nipomo’s Liz Renner also hit a double, and Jenny Cardenas was 2 for 3.

Morro Bay 5, San Luis Obispo 4

Morro Bay scored an early run in the first inning to gain a quick lead that lasted until the third inning on the road.

San Luis Obispo, which had seven hits, came back to score one run in the third inning and another in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead over Morro Bay.

Leah O’Reilly was 2 for 3 for the Tigers.

San Luis Obispo added two more in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead.

Morro Bay’s Karly Alfirevic hit an inside-the-park, two-run home run in the sixth inning to put the Pirates, which had eight hits as a team, back in the game.

Ciara Ramos also contributed to Morro Bay’s rally with two doubles as the Pirates completed the comeback.

No. Cty Christian 10, Coastal Christian 5

Cheyenne Ricks had three hits and scored two runs for North County Christian (1-0).

Kelsey Paulus tossed six innings, striking out 12 in the win.

The Crusaders were patient at the plate, walking 16 times.
