  Janice Peters named Citizen of the Year in Morro Bay

  Former Mayor Janice Peters has been named the 2011 Citizen of the Year by the Morro Bay Chamber of Commerce.

  In honoring Peters, the chamber took note of her long history of service. Peters served a total of six years as mayor, eight years on the City Council, and six years on the Planning Commission.

  She coordinates the city’s Winter Bird Festival and founded the annual Mermaid and Pirate Parade as well as the annual “Fundraiser Follies” to support local nonprofits. She acts in theater productions at the SLO Little Theater and Cambria’s Pewter Plough Playhouse.

  Have you ever finished a book and said to yourself: “Cripes, I could have written that.” Well, so have tens of thousands of others. In 2009, for example, 288,355 new titles and editions were published in the U.S. alone.

  I couldn’t find more current numbers, but you get the idea. A lot of people take up the life of a writer, and a lot more harbor Walter Mitty aspirations of doing so. (Hey, if it were easy, everyone would be doing it.)

  I make note of this with regard to the Central Coast Book and Author Festival at Mission Plaza from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Sunday. It’s an opportunity to meet some 50 authors — both local and from out of the area — who have taken the plunge into publishing.

  Whether in wineries, bars or backyards, Espressivo! Chamber Theatre wants to bring live theater to the masses.

  “We want to go to the space where people already feel comfortable,” explained Devin Wallace, who co-founded the traveling theater troupe in late 2010. “In wine bars, we’ve had people say, ‘I don’t go to the theater, but the theater came here.’ ”

  Based in San Luis Obispo, Espressivo! presents original one-hour plays at intimate venues throughout the county. The company’s latest show, “Lunatics in Love,” is playing at a total of eight locations, including the Pewter Plough Playhouse in Cambria, Poalillo Vineyards in Paso Robles and The Red Barn in Los Osos (the show’s first performance was Wednesday at the STAX Wine Bar in Morro Bay).
