Pismo Beach planning commissioners this week reinforced that they dont want drive-through businesses in the citys pedestrian-friendly downtown area, nor do they want them in the Shell Beach commercial area.
But commissioners were receptive Tuesday to possibly allowing a drive-through in two spots in the city, said Pismo Beach senior planner Scot Graham.
One area is a piece of vacant property at Fourth Street and Five Cities Drive, adjacent to the Scolaris Food & Drug Company shopping center.
The other is a spot off Shell Beach Road near Spyglass Drive that at one time housed a Chevron station but is currently vacant.
Both areas are in the citys coastal zone, in which drive-through facilities are currently prohibited.
The city has several drive-through restaurants outside its coastal zone, including a Taco Bell, a Jack in the Box and McDonalds.
All were doing is providing the option if a business wanted to propose a drive-through, Planning Commission chairman John Sorgenfrei said Wednesday.
Graham said the issue will likely move forward within the next six months, first to the Planning Commission to review the actual language of the amendments to the citys general plan and its 1983 zoning code. The commission will then make a recommendation to the City Council. The Coastal Commission also must approve the amendments.
