  A gasoline can stored in an electrical room with a water heater and an electrical panel sparked a fire Thursday morning that shut down the Denny’s restaurant on Madonna Road in San Luis Obispo, according to the city fire marshal.

  The fire, contained in the restaurant’s attic, caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage and left as many as 40 employees temporarily out of work.

  Firefighters responded to the call around 7:18 a.m. and extinguished the fire by 7:38 a.m. Witnesses said they could see smoke rising from the building’s roof but did not see flames at first. But as fire crews worked to cut ventilation holes in the roof, the flames could be seen rising hot and quick.

  County Fire off hook for vehicles

  The temporary “disappearance” of four vehicles that County Fire sought to auction off has led to a change in the way it disposes of its used vehicles, the agency said Tuesday.

  County Fire officials told the San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors last week that the department had not been paid the $10,000 it was expecting for two Ford Crown Victoria cars and two fire engines it had declared surplus in 2007 and 2008 because the auction house that bought them declared bankruptcy before it paid.

  County Fire officials said they were unable to track down either the auction house or the vehicles. They asked the supervisors to give the agency “relief from liability” for the $10,000.
